Web Host Migration and Website Design

MaJillo Virtual does their own development on their website and has done research on most of the web hosting companies that provide website services. MaJillo Virtual uses HostGator for their web hosting needs and chooses to develop their website using HTML 5 and Bootstrap. MaJillo Virtual can assist companies in creating a beautiful, easy to navigate website whether a simple or complex design is desired!

In April 2020, Indeed Safety Inc., a safety consulting company based in Albuquerque, NM, came to MaJillo Virtual to help them migrate away from their existing web host provider. Indeed Safety Inc. used the web builder tools available from their provider and used their provider’s developers to create and modify their website. This was convenient for them, but it does come with disadvantages:

  1. Using the provider’s tools and developers usually means that the company does not really own their website. Once they choose to move to another web host provider, they lose their website and need to pay for another, either going with a web developer or using their new provider’s services. This can lead to the company not having a website for a period of time and having to go through an expensive redesign.
  2. Using a web host provider’s developers oftentimes does not lead to optimum results with regard to website looks and navigability. Web host providers are trying to do the bare minimum in order to maximize their return.
  3. Getting support can sometimes be a hassle with long wait times for responses.

In the case of Indeed Safety Inc., they were experiencing all 3 scenarios listed above. They were coming up on the renewal deadline for their web host provider (within 2 weeks) and did not want to have to sign up with the web host provider again.

MaJillo Virtual provided information to Indeed Safety Inc. on HostGator and informed them of what it would take to migrate away from their web host provider. MaJillo Virtual created a prototype website for Indeed Safety Inc. to see if they wanted to commit to changing providers. Once given the go-ahead, MaJillo Virtual was able to move their website to HostGator while keeping their existing domains registered with the old web host provider. Keeping their old provider as the domain registrar was a simpler and cheaper route resulting in minimal downtime for their email and website. Having the old web host provider continue to be the domain registrar also poses minimal risk with regard to the support issues listed in #3 above. Most of the time, there are not many issues associated with the domain registrar holding the domain. The cost was also comparable. All this was done within the 2 week timeframe needed to avoid the renewal cost.

MaJillo Virtual uses Fedora Linux and many of its open source tools for development.

Since Indeed Safety Inc. used MaJillo Virtual to create their new site, Indeed Safety fully owns their site. MaJillo Virtual makes sure to version control all changes to the site using GitHub, which not only makes modifications and rollbacks manageable, but also backs up the site for Indeed Safety Inc. in case they ever need to recover from an unexpected crash or if they ever want to revert to another version of the site. This also means if they choose to move to another web host provider in the future, they can move their site immediately without having to re-do the website.

GitHub is fantastic for software versioning.

MaJillo Virtual makes sure to keep Indeed Safety Inc. up-to-date with the changes on the website on a daily basis through calls or email and responds in a timely manner when requests are made for changes. MaJillo Virtual also makes suggestions on design considerations and provides samples of the website changes before any of the changes are made public. This ensures that the customer gets their point across on their website and gives them a say in its appearance.
